Stress and burnout

When responsibility keeps expanding, the ability to recover may not keep pace. Burnout is not proof of a personal failing. It can be understood as a system adapting to sustained demands, even when the adaptations themselves become costly.

What does the week ask of you?

A demanding week is not always a problem. Sometimes work is intense and a quieter week follows. The difficulty is when there is no meaningful return: responsibilities keep arriving, vigilance stays high, and even a day off gets spent catching up. Rest may become another task to perform well rather than a change in the conditions that produced the strain.

High-responsibility roles often reward the ability to put your own needs aside. Healthcare workers may be the steady presence for everyone else. First responders may leave a shift only to keep listening for the next alarm at home. The pages for healthcare professionals and first responders describe different versions of this pressure, without assuming every person in either role feels the same way.

Caregiving outside paid work matters too. You might be supporting a parent, a partner or a child while also keeping a job afloat. If you find yourself saying ‘I should be able to handle this on my own,’ I would want to understand where that rule came from and what it protects, rather than argue with it from the outset.

Why rest alone may not reset the pattern.

A weekend can ease exhaustion without changing the arrangement that keeps producing it. If saying no feels dangerous, if your identity depends on being indispensable, or if the body remains ready for a demand even in a quiet room, a break may end before the underlying pattern has moved. This is not a reason to dismiss rest. It is a reason to ask what happens when rest is over.

The approach page describes patterns as adaptations. A way of organizing your life can have been useful, even necessary, in one set of circumstances and become constricting in another. That view shifts the question from ‘Why can't I cope?’ to ‘What has this pattern been doing for me, and what does it cost now?’

Stress also shows up physically. Sleep may become shallow, a small interruption may feel disproportionate, or the body may go quiet while the mind keeps planning. Somatic work can make room to notice those responses during talk therapy, without requiring a particular exercise or treating the body as an obstacle to overcome.

Rebuilding room to respond.

I do not ask you to become less committed to the people and work that matter to you. We can look at how you recognize limits, how responsibility is distributed, and what happens inside when you consider doing something differently. Even imagining a boundary can bring up guilt or alarm. That reaction is part of what deserves attention.

Capacity before intensity is one of the principles I use. We begin with what can be examined without adding another impossible demand to an already crowded week. A change that looks simple on paper may ask a great deal of the system that learned to survive by staying useful. There is no reason to rush past that complexity.

Burnout can overlap with anxiety, grief or a life transition. The anxiety page and life transitions page offer other lenses if those words fit better. A label can help organize a question, but it cannot replace the particular account of your days, relationships and obligations.

A conversation that is not another performance.

You do not need to show that you have reached a breaking point to talk about stress. Nor do you need to make a polished case for why your responsibilities are unusually hard. We can start with an ordinary week, where your attention goes, and what happens when there is no one left to care for but yourself.

Sessions are available in Vero Beach and by secure video when you are physically in Florida. The free phone consultation lasts up to 15 minutes and gives you a chance to ask about fit and format. If fees affect whether the work is possible, the rates page explains private pay, out-of-network status and superbills.

I cannot promise that therapy will remove the conditions around your work or change other people's expectations. It can offer a place to examine how you meet those conditions, what choices are available and what support is missing. That work is deliberate, not a quick fix for a system that has been carrying too much for too long. If you are unsure whether the word burnout fits, we do not have to settle the name first. We can begin with the demands themselves, what happens when they stop, and which parts of the day still feel yours.
